How Tennessee SNAP Benefits Are Calculated
The benefit calculation isn’t just about your gross income. Tennessee DHS applies a series of deductions to arrive at your “net income,” then calculates your benefit based on that number. Here’s the exact formula they use.
Calculate Gross Income
Add all earned + unearned income for everyone in the household
Apply Deductions
Standard deduction, 20% earned income deduction, shelter and dependent care costs
Get Net Income
Gross income minus all allowable deductions equals your net income
Calculate Benefit
Maximum benefit minus 30% of your net income equals your monthly SNAP amount
The Allowable Deductions
This is where most online calculators fall short. They skip deductions entirely and just compare gross income to the limit. That’s wrong and leads to people thinking they don’t qualify when they actually do. Our calculator applies every deduction Tennessee DHS uses:
- Standard Deduction: A fixed amount based on household size ($193/mo for most households in 2026)
- Earned Income Deduction: 20% of all earned income (wages) is automatically deducted
- Dependent Care Deduction: Childcare or adult care costs paid so a household member can work
- Medical Expense Deduction: Out-of-pocket medical costs over $35/mo for elderly or disabled members
- Excess Shelter Deduction: Rent + utilities exceeding 50% of net income after other deductions
